Charles William Clay, 77, of Dry Creek, WV passed away unexpectedly on January 14, 2022. He passed peacefully at the Raleigh General Hospital after a brief stay for a chronic medical condition. Charles was a kind, generous and loving husband, father and grandfather. He was always there for his family, and others, through their ups and downs, and taught them to enjoy every moment life has to offer. He loved to garden and especially loved to share the harvest with friends and family. He always had a project - or three - going but could be counted on to drop everything and help anyone if the need arose. He loved being outdoors. You would find Dad in the garage, on the patio, sitting by the firepit, fishing or camping. Charles always aimed to make people feel welcome in his home and life. He had a mind like a steel trap, never forgetting anything. He would often confuse us by starting a story with “Do you remember where so and so used to live?” Dad was a deep thinker. If you mentioned a problem with your car, lawnmower, plumbing, electrical or anything else, he’d have suggestions for you right away - and usually a week or two later, as well, when he’d circle back around to see how it turned out. His three girls will be eternally grateful to all of those who always kept an extra watch on Dad for us, especially Deanie and Dennie Doss, Dennis and Jennifer Doss, and Charles and Loretta Jarrell. On his final day, he was surrounded by his daughters, who he adored. He is preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Sue Snodgrass Clay, who he met at the Whitesville Fireman’s Fair in 1966 and Debbie was born 11 months later. His sisters, Ardith Lee Clay and Anna Clay Scarbro, preceded him in death, but he is survived by two sisters in Illinois, Juanita Clay Sellards and Doris Cravenor, and one brother, Chip Clay of Arnett. Charles is survived by three daughters, Deb, Amy and Kim Clay, all of North Carolina, as well as his favorite grandson, Brad Clay Pettry, also of North Carolina. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon, January 18, 2022 at 1:30 p.m. in the Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, WV with Rev. Larry Kinder. Visitation will be one hour before the service. Burial will follow in the Pineview Cemetery, Orgas, WV. Online Condolences at www.armstrongfuneralhomewv.net
