Charles Earl Dickens, 83, of Arnett, WV passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 16, 2023 while in Hospice care. He was born on October 22, 1939, to Alonzo Perry and Lettie Pearl Dickens in Arnett, WV. Charles is survived by his wife, Billie Sue; daughter, Tammy Gobble; grandchildren, Stacy Bartley (Steve Bartley), Jordan Gobble (Adam Day), Cory Ford, and Jenna Ford; great-grandchildren, Ashton Meadows, Emily Bartley, Taytum Meadows, Ava Hudson, Trinity Gill, and Penelope Ford; siblings and their spouses, Edsel and Carol Dickens, Ronald and Charlotte Dickens, Roger and Wanda Dickens, Mildred “Mickie” and Rich Bagshaw, and Diana “Susie” and Derrick Dillon; brother-in-law, Jim Stricklen; cat, Binx; and many loved nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Charles is preceded in death by his parents, Alonzo Perry Dickens and Lettie Pearl Acord-Dickens; sister, Norma Stricklen; and daughter, Tina Ford. After graduating from Marsh Fork High School, he enlisted in the United States Army in 1957. Charles retired from McGraw and Sons Construction. He enjoyed spending time outdoors tending to his garden, completing crossword puzzles and word searches, cutting grass, and weed eating. He also loved giving back to and supporting his community through his handiwork and teaching Sunday School at Arnett Chapel. Charles has been described by many as “the best man [they] have ever known”, and his legacy will live on through the memories he has created and lives he has touched. He will be forever remembered as a kind, loving husband, father, brother, papaw, and friend. Funeral services will be Thursday, July 20, 2023, 2pm at Arnett Chapel, Arnett, WV, with Pastor Larry Kinder officiating. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service. Burial will follow at Miller Cemetery, Rock Creek, WV. Pallbearers will be Andrew Dickens, Jarrod Dickens, Michael Dickens, Russell Dickens, Lance Dillon, and Mike Watson. Charles’s family would like to thank the staff of Hospice of Southern West Virginia for their kindness and care. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to Hospice of Southern West Virginia in Beckley.
