Gloria Joyce Swanigan passed away peacefully at home in Hurricane, WV, on September 19, 2021, with little warning.  Both of her daughters and her only grandchild were with her in her final hours.

 Joyce was born July 23, 1935, to the late Dewey and Minnie (Wriston) Ferrell in Orgas, WV.  She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 45 years, Herbert Swanigan, Jr.; all of her brothers Farris, Kermit, Eugene, and Harry Ferrell; sisters-in-law Bonnie and Kathleen Ferrell and Freda (Swanigan) Stanley; and her cousin, best friend, and sister at heart Jewell (Dickens) Hornsby.

 She is survived by her daughters Lois Norris and Teresa O’Cassidy; her granddaughter Nicole Norris, with whom she shared an exceptionally close relationship [Nikki was the biggest joy in Joyce’s and Herbert’s lives.]; her son-in-law John O’Cassidy who she loved as much as she would her own son; and two of her brothers’ widows with whom she spoke to often Mary “Maggie” Dustin and Pastor Dorothy June Ferrell; and many members of her husband’s family as well as many members of her own family. 

Joyce loved her and Herbert’s extended families.  She lived with Farris and Bonnie as a young woman and always thought of their children as hers.  She enjoyed quilting, sewing, crafting, and reading.  She did not believe in holding onto negative feelings, but strongly held her memories of good times.  Gloria Joyce lived up to the name her Mawmaw Mandy Ferrell gave her. 

Visitation will be at Keith Full Gospel Church in Keith, WV on September 25, 2021, at 11, with funeral services to be held at the church at noon with her sister-in-law Pastor Dorothy June Ferrell officiating.  Burial will follow at Pineview Cemetery.  Due to current COVID concerns, the family will not be holding a dinner after internment. Armstrong Funeral Home in Whitesville, WV, is serving the family.
