Johnnie Canterbury Obituary

Johnnie Lee Canterbury, 69, from Friendly View (Dry Creek) passed on to be with the Lord on December 17, 2020.  Johnnie was a lifelong resident of West Virginia.  Throughout his life Johnnie made many friends as a teacher, coach, coal miner, and avid softball player.  Johnnie was a selfless person who was always there to help a friend in need without them having to ask.  Johnnie was well known by most everyone up and down Coal River and by countless others throughout Raleigh County and many parts of West Virginia. Born October 31, 1951, in Charleston, WV, Johnnie was proceeded in death by his father, Nevie C. Canterbury, mother, Leona M. (Scarbro) McCoy, birth mother, Rosa L. (Massey) McComas, a brother, James O. Canterbury, and a sister JoAnn (McComas) Davis.  He is survived by a daughter, Tammy J. Juarez (Pedro) of Hickory, NC; a son, Johnnie L. Canterbury, Jr., of Conover, NC; four sisters, Elaine Stoneberg (The Late Lawrence) of Des Plaines, IL, Pamela Curry (Earl) of Beckley, WV, Shiela McComas of Columbus, GA, and Susan Cross (Robert) of Elkton, MD; four brothers, Jerry Canterbury (Janet) of Beckley, WV; Gary Asbury of Oak Hill, WV; Jeffrey Canterbury (Katrina) of Johnsburg, IL; and Thomas McComas, Sr. (Verta) of Trenton, OH; five grandchildren, Ashley Romero, Kayla Ratledge, Christin Ratledge, Pedro Juarez, and Samantha Juarez, all of Hickory, NC; seven great grandchildren, Bryson Romero, Ryan and Jaylynd Canterbury, Jennyfer and Hailey Morales, and Alexis and Addison Hunter, all of Hickory, NC; and many nieces and nephews. Johnnie will be truly missed by his family members, close friends, students, and all who he helped over his lifetime.  In accordance with his wishes, there will only be a service for the immediate family.  If you wish, you may make a donation in Johnnie's name at either the American Cancer Society, https://donate3.cancer.org/ or the Humane Society of Raleigh County, https://hsrcwv.org/donate/.
