It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Melvin “Ray” Mutter age 81 of Pettus, WV. His lord and Savior called him home on May 15, 2025, while at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, WV following a long battle with COPD and Black Lung. Ray was a graduate of Marsh Fork High School in Montcoal, WV Class of 1962. He was a veteran serving the United States Army from 1962-1964 after returning he would begin his 41 years in the mining industry, where he found it to be not only a job but a passion, beginning at Armco Steele then moving on to Bethlehem Steele teaching mine safety training and eventually retiring from Massey Energy in 2005. Being an avid outdoors man, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and digging ginseng it was after retiring that he found his greatest hobby gardening, growing his own plants from seeds was his favorite. Ray also loved attending church at the Pettus Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for many years, loving the church gatherings, Christmas Plays and game nights. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Shirley Mutter and infant daughters, Stephanie Rae and Valerie Lynn and beloved grandson, Gregory Daniel Taylor. Ray is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Linda Roach Mutter, a daughter, Tammy “Tommy” Harrah of Whitesville, WV, granddaughter, Tiffany Taylor of Newport, News, VA, granddaughter-in-law, Ashley Taylor of Riverside, RI, great granddaughter, Charlette Taylor, Riverside, RI, brothers,-in-law, Charles Roach of Hinton, WV and Larry “Judy” Roach of Joplin, MO; many nieces and nephews; extended family include, Jerry, Pam and Hannah Keefer of Chapel Ridge, SC and several special friends that would come by for visits. The family would like to thank the Bowers Hospice House for the wonderful care and compassion that was given to Ray and special thanks to the nurses that cared for him. As per Ray’s wishes he will be cremated. A celebration of Ray’s Life will be scheduled at a future date. In lieu of flowers please make donation to the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, WV.
